  Occupational Medicine and Worker’s Compensation

The physicians and providers at STAR are experienced in the management of Worker’s Compensation injuries. Dr. Hemler and Dr. Cohen are actively involved in the teaching and instruction of other physicians regarding management of Occupational Medicine Claims. Dr. Hemler holds a certification for the University of San Francisco Occupational Medicine Course. His Air Force duties include surveillance monitoring, site and shop visits, and return to duty assessments and evaluations. Dr. Cohen is actively involved in the management of chronic pain and work related rehabilitation. John DiSiatto PT and Ted Layne PT both have extensive experience in the management of injured workers.

All STAR providers share the philosophy that employment and working are an important part of being a mature adult. Injured workers are managed with the assignment of restrictions. Rarely is an injured worker placed on temporary total disability. Employers are expected to provide accommodations and actively support the injured worker as they improve. Complex cases are managed by the process of ‘closing doors’ and the expectation that the natural history of most injuries is improvement. Nurse case managers are frequently part of the treatment process.

Maximum medical improvement is based on a reduction in pain and improved function. The Colorado Division of Worker’s Compensation Guidelines are an important part of medical treatment for injured workers. Emphasis is placed on care that is medically reasonable and necessary. Other guidelines are also consulted.
