Dr. Yusuke Wakeshima is originally a native of Long Island, N.Y. He received his Bachelor degree in Biology from Columbia University in New York City, and completed his medical degree on a military scholarship at Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, P.A. He completed his internship in Pediatrics at the Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, and underwent further postgraduate training in Undersea Medicine (diving / hyperbaric / submarine medicine and radiation health) at the Naval Undersea Medical Institute (NUMI) in Groton CT and Panama City Beach, FL. During his training at NUMI, Dr. Wakeshima was certified as a U.S. Navy Deep Sea Diver.
Dr. Wakeshima was an active duty Naval Medical Officer for 7 years. During that span, he served in the Persian Gulf aboard the USS Dixon AS-37 during the first Gulf War, and also served as the Senior Diving Medical Officer for Surface Pacific Fleet and Explosive Ordnance Disposal. During his tenure as Senior Diving Medical Officer, Dr. Wakeshima cared for, treated and worked operationally with Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians, Navy Deep Sea Divers, Navy SEALS, Underwater Construction Team Divers (“Sea Bee” divers), U.S. Marine Force Recon, and submariners. Dr. Wakeshima completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2000 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. During his residency, he transitioned from active duty military to the reserves, and served in the reserves for another 4 years in the U.S. Navy Reserves Fleet Hospital. Dr. Wakeshima’s medical interest include, non surgical management of the spine, complex orthotics and prosthetics management, sports medicine, musculoskeletal and neurological disorders, diving and hyperbaric medicine, and wound healing. His personal interests include Naval history, scuba diving, hiking, herpetology (the study and husbandry of reptiles), and automobiles. Dr. Wakeshima relocated to Colorado in 2000. He is currently a licensed physician in Colorado and Washington. He maintains board certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and is level II accredited, Colorado Division of Workers’ Compensation. |
